Route 66 has one rule: the stops are the trip. Nobody comes home raving about the pavement β they come home with a photo of a whale, paint on their sneakers, and strong opinions about which diner's pie won.
Here's the can't-miss list for all eight states β the stops that earn their legend, in driving order from Chicago to the pier. Save it, print it, and check them off as you go.
Illinois β where it begins
- The 'Begin Route 66' sign, Chicago β Grant Park at Adams Street; the departure photo is mandatory.
- Gemini Giant, Wilmington β a 30-foot spaceman guarding a hot-dog stand since 1965.
- Pontiac's murals & Route 66 museum β the best photo-op density in the state.
- Cozy Dog Drive In, Springfield β birthplace of the corn dog on a stick. This is a pilgrimage.
Missouri β caves and crossings
- Chain of Rocks Bridge β walk the old 66 crossing over the Mississippi (cars no, families yes).
- Meramec Caverns, Stanton β the barn-roof-billboard cave, and it delivers; 60Β° inside year-round.
- Cuba's murals & the Wagon Wheel Motel β one of the oldest continuously operating motels on the road.
- Devil's Elbow β a gorgeous forgotten river bend of original 1926 alignment.
Kansas β 13 miles, zero filler
- Cars on the Route, Galena β the real tow truck behind Mater, plus sandwiches in a restored gas station.
- Rainbow Bridge, Riverton β the last Marsh arch bridge on the road; you can still drive it.
Oklahoma β the most living 66
- Blue Whale of Catoosa β the most beloved roadside attraction in America. Full stop.
- Arcadia's Round Barn + Pops 66 β an 1898 round barn next to a soda ranch with 700 flavors and a 66-foot neon bottle.
- Oklahoma Route 66 Museum, Clinton β the best single museum on the road.
- Lucille's, Hydro β the 'Mother of the Mother Road's' preserved 1929 station.
Texas β the panhandle legends
- Cadillac Ranch, Amarillo β ten nose-down Cadillacs; bring spray paint and old clothes.
- The Big Texan, Amarillo β the 72-oz steak challenge is dinner theater; the limo with horns is free.
- Midpoint sign, Adrian β 1,139 miles each way; the halfway photo.
- Leaning water tower, Groom β Texas's Tower of Pisa, built crooked on purpose to make you stop. It works.
New Mexico β neon and old adobe
- Tucumcari's neon mile β the Blue Swallow Motel and Tepee Curios at night are the road's best light show.
- Blue Hole, Santa Rosa β an 80-foot-deep sapphire swimming hole in the desert. Pack suits.
- The pre-1937 Santa Fe loop β the older, twistier, prettier alignment through the plaza.
- Central Avenue, Albuquerque β 18 miles of urban 66 with the best surviving neon density anywhere.
Arizona β the time capsule
- Petrified Forest National Park β the only national park containing a stretch of old 66.
- Wigwam Motel, Holbrook β sleep in a 1950 concrete teepee. Book far ahead.
- Standin' on the Corner, Winslow β plus La Posada's gardens next door.
- Seligman β Kingman β the longest unbroken historic stretch, saved by Seligman's barber Angel Delgadillo; the town's still a wink-and-a-grin time capsule.
- Oatman β wild burros rule the hairpin mountain alignment. Drive it slow, love every second.
California β the finish line
- Elmer's Bottle Tree Ranch, Oro Grande β a forest of bottle trees chiming in the desert wind.
- Original McDonald's Museum, San Bernardino β weird, free, and historic.
- Santa Monica Pier β the 'End of the Trail' sign β ferris wheel, churros, the Pacific. The only correct ending.
How to use this list without ruining the trip
Don't try to hit everything β that's a checklist death march. Pick one anchor per driving day, let two or three smaller stops happen naturally, and leave slack for the unplanned ones, because the hand-painted 'WORLD'S LARGEST ___' sign you never researched is where the best story of the trip lives. The icons are small businesses: buy the milkshake, take the tour, tip the tour guide. That's what keeps the road alive for the next hundred years.
Stop-collector's kit (no prices β Amazon updates those live):
