How to Winterize Your Car: The One-Saturday Checklist Before the First Storm

Every winter has a first storm, and the first storm runs a free inspection on every car in town: it finds the tired battery at 6am, the bald tires on the on-ramp, the wipers that smear instead of clear. The results get posted on the shoulder of the highway.

Test the battery (the #1 cold-weather casualty)

Cold cuts a battery's cranking power drastically — the marginal battery that started fine all fall dies in the first hard freeze, always on the busiest morning. Most auto-parts stores test batteries free in five minutes; if yours is over four years old or tests weak, replace it now while it's a errand instead of an emergency. While you're there: have them check the alternator's charging output too.

Tires: tread, pressure, and the winter-tire question

Snow traction lives in tread depth: try the quarter test — insert a quarter head-down in the groove; if you can see all of Washington's head, you're under 4/32" and it's time to shop. Set pressures to the door-jamb number and re-check monthly (pressure drops ~1 psi per 10°F). If you live in real snow country, dedicated winter tires outperform all-seasons by a margin that has to be felt to be believed — they're the single biggest winter upgrade money buys.

Fluids: oil, coolant, and the washer jug that matters most

Three checks: oil changed if due (some manuals call for lighter winter grades — check yours); coolant tested for a proper 50/50 mix (a $5 tester tells you the freeze point in seconds); and the unsung hero — winter washer fluid rated to -20°F or better, plus a spare jug in the trunk. Summer fluid freezes in the lines, and a salted-over windshield with no spray is a genuine roadside emergency at speed.

Wiper blades are done after about a year — if they streak or chatter, swap them (winter beam blades resist ice-packing).
